Don't get the wrong idea - I'm not suggesting the site go down.
Below is the text of an email I was just about to send to a number of regular posters. I decided to post it instead in order to encourage discourse on the site rather than via my inbox. Plus, I feel there is value in everyone reading this.
Hey there! Forgive the form-message-style of this email, but I wanted to contact those Newsvine users who I felt make a substantial contribution to the site to send them an important message. Whoa.. that just sounded like spam, right?
I'm worried. I'm worried that Newsvine has too few people like us. People who enjoy discussing news, posting news, and becoming more informed. Whether that means politics, tech, business, or news from afar, we're all information hungry.
I'm worried that we're approaching critical mass too slowly. You may disagree with me on that, but I'm okay with our disagreement. That's the beauty of Newsvine. I truly believe that Newsvine and sites like it have the ability to educate people and make their views more well-balanced.
Basically this email is a call for us - all of us - to help evangelize Newsvine more broadly in the "offline" world. I hope in the future I can learn from those who have not yet joined.
Please join me in evangelizing Newsvine.
This post was inspired by the book Creating Customer Evangelists. Pick it up.
I don't know any numbers for how many there actually are here. I know the core posters / discussers may be not as large as we'd hope but I don't see it as a dire situation. But I do agree we should all do more to help the numbers grow.
I think the recent changes to the author pages will do some great things for the social scene, retention, and participation. Being able to talk to each other and track friends only makes the community better, a good product will prevail. Good content is up to us.
I pimp Newsvine offline by wearing my NV t-shirt.
The ladies love it.
I wear mine to the bar every few weeks, and I make sure to mention it a few times too. I don't know about the ladies loving it, but I still represent in style.
Uh. How do I get this Vine shirt? I am a shirt whore and will pimp all schwag. :-D
Yes, yes. Are these self-made t-shirts? I would love to pimp newsvine offline with a kick-ass newsvine t-shirt.
A Newsvine T-Shirt?
Its easier to track the core number of posters but how about the core number of readers?
I generally read a few times daily, but don't get much chance to post news (though I'm doing more so now), and only post comments where I think is appropriate.
I think more of the 'critical mass' will be just readers as they are used to the more passive way news is delivered. The number of this type of person is hard to work out, without login figures or users online.
The problem with having more posters is that you end up with more duplicate articles - although newsvine seems to be doing a pretty good job of dealing with these at the moment.
Adverts are going to do something similar with lots of members starting to post news so they can create some income - the quality of these articles is naturally going to vary so we will need ti frequent posters to keep the content quality up and be increased by some of these new writers.
I have the same problem (don't get time to post often). And I honestly don't post enough on my own blog, much less Newsvine. Possibly, more beneficial news bloggers could be incorporated with Newsvine if a system could be created (maybe with import of authorized RSS feeds).
I think that an increasing number of valuable posters would be very beneficial; however I think most people will simply seed links to Newsvine without commenting on them (which I believe is not what Newsvine should be used for, unless a better and separate UI for reading these seeds is created).
Last night, at dinner, my father was having a discussion with one of our old neighbors about reading news online. He has come to settle with Google News because it keeps everything up-to-date. I chimed in and suggested he start using Newsvine. Not only because of the wealth of user-generated content, but because of how quickly AP stories are posted. Hopefully, my argument was convincing enough for him to make the switch.
That was also my first real life "pimping of Newsvine" and it felt good because I know I was endorsing a great product with lots of potential.
I know the feeling. My parents have gone on holiday and they asked me whether I wanted the paper to continue to be delivered to our house.
I pointed out about Newsvine and how I pick up most of the technology news that interests me, as well as stuff about the UK and the US so didn't really need the paper and they were surprised that a site like this exists.
They though the best you could get was sort of like BBC News. Once they're back my dad's asked me to show him it so there might be some interest there from an audience which isn't quite used to things like this.

As much as I love Newsvine, I don't think I'll ever stop reading the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Even though they're not on the cutting edge of news, newspapers have the luxury of time and the ability to offer perspective on more broad and different aspects of my world.
Although, the more Newsvine grows, the more we will see different audiences participating and that can only lead to greater exposure in the offline world as well as more interesting content for us!

I'd agree there - they're definately not redundant yet. I read one every day on the way to college to catch up and read a different style of srticle to what is found online.
The thing is I'm very interested in technology news which newsvine is great for at the moment.
The paper my parents get is more tabloid like and although has some interesting articles, it's not quite as good as reading it from a couple of sources online - for example I read bbc news on top of newsvine to make sure I get UK news as its not quite as prominent on here as the news from US is.
Plus by reading around I have the option to seed newsvine so others can read these articles.
Just last week I heard Newsvine being described on one of Los Angeles's most popular news stations, KFWB News 980. I think that kind of publicity is great, and should definitely be continued.
I am constantly talking about Newsvine to my socially aware friends - and I post on Newsvine during my lunch hour, so my co-workers are always asking me about it. I think that it's important to get the word out - but only to people you believe to be intelligent, critical people who will have something to add to the community. I don't want to grow Newsvine's numbers simply by adding people - but adding quality people.
So, basically, let's focus on quality over quantity.

I agree, and as much as I am a "newb" here, I have already told my family about the site- I love it.
seems to me, the problem with newsvine is there's too much talk about newsvine.
try commontimes. They actually cover the news.
That kind of irritates me too, actually, but just seems to come with the territory after any update to the system.
So, The first rule of Newsvine, is we don't talk about Newsvine?
And the second rule of Newsvine, is to repeat the first rule of Newsvine, and pass it on?
A brief peak at commontimes.org suggested to me that it's populated by the same insane Bush-haters that are dragging down Newsvine.
geez rockman needed a thread to lash out at the vine? maybe you should get more of your bush loving friends over here.. i think the problem is about 29% of the public agrees with you so it is easy to think public sites are biased.
I hate all politicians but mostly agree with small government conservatives..without the christian rules.
I don't totally understand why people think there is too much meta content. Percentage wise there is very little to be honest, as even just on my watchlist there is only, on average, a 1-3% amount of Newsvine content (per day).
Heaven forbids I lash out on Bush. I mean he's just a defenseless puppy, right?
insane Bush-haters
indeed. Because shouting "bring-it-on" to Terrorists and incite them to triple their attacks isn't insane. It's just part of the stay the course strategy.
Newsvine right now is the bomb diggity. We must continue to have a quality over quantity of users policy, to keep our great community. It's so nice to be able to write comments back and forth with people who read about current events and history on a constant basis, as opposed to a few forum-posters who watch 1 "favorite" cable-news, and base their opinions over their favorite anchors (i.e. O'Reilly, Chris Matthews), and small 1-page articles.
Let me use different words to befriend our beloved minority:
"we shall fight spamming over there so that we don't have to fight them over here here"
"these spammers hate our freedom"
"We will smoke em out"
ps.
"Saddam"
Here's my question - why spend time on a thread by throwing out negatives about Newsvine without offering any solutions on how to make it better? If you prefer a different news site, thank you for sharing it, but talk about what exactly makes it "better" than Newsvine - rather than just saying that it is better. Also, if you are finding too many people with one political view or another on Newsvine, why not invite people with the views you would like to see more of so that you can populate the Vine with people whose views you care to see.
How does Newsvine not cover the news? It gets seeds from major news sources as well as has members seed their own links. You can use your watchlist to filter content so you are only seeing articles you wish to see.
Newsvine has some problems - but every site does. I am constantly letting the Newsvine staff know of things that I wish to see improved upon. If it's an issue I think the general community should know about I'll post my own article, or I'll participate in the discussion on an existing one. I think that it is healthy for any community to have open discussions about that community and any issues (positive or negative) they see in it. If you don't wish to see/read these articles - then don't. That's the beauty about Newsvine, you can choose what you read and participate in and what you don't.
This article is about getting the word about Newsvine out there - and getting quality people to participate in quality discussions. I have a hard time seeing a problem with that.

Can't say I like the format that much. The site looks ugly... like ugly enough that an amateur like myself could improve it considerably in about an hour. Now granted, content is most important... but I already get that here... in a much nicer looking package.
I like sow the vine.. just keep in the organic theme..
but for tshirts.. i'd rather own "vine pimp"
or "if i wanted to know your opinion i would read it on newsvine"
But I am all for more and diverse views here.
Time to paste the city with flyers again! "Here, let me hand you this piece of paper so you can throw it away for me."
/sigh
Such is the life of flyers.
back to the newsvine t-shirts...... whaaaaaa??????
please send me a t-shirt ........ :)
Here is something that you can do. Have newsvine business cards..... you can purchase them double sided.... one side could be the newsvine logo and the other side a simple name of blog and web url and brief description..... is there an eps of the newsvine logo anywhere?
I'm pretty sure the comments about t-shirts were sarcasm :P
as far as pimping newsvine goes, I should be in the middle east for a few weeks this summer for a special frenzy report.
Indeed... more and farther than anyone else so far...
I'm late to the conversation, but thought I'd make a recommendation. It's possible to "Pimp Newsvine" without talking about Newsvine exhaustively, especially with the new RSS system. I've added a Newsvine section, to my website—this works well for me, since I rarely discuss current events or news on my site. Of course the view is Newsvine becomes myopic, but it does act as a teaser/introduction for those who would be unaware of Newsvine.
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
